Scarborough's plazas are crammed with small un-prepossessing
ethnic eateries that most of us ride right past. Not only are we
missing some excellent food and new tastes, but some real
bargains too. John North, a Scarborough writer and book reviewer
who spends too much time indoors, forces himself to lunch out
several times a week just for a change of environment. In this
column he will explore some of these locations and offer
suggestions to adventurous eaters.

How are restaurants chosen?
Some I know from personal experience, some I hear about from
readers and friends, and some I just stop and try while driving
around. Some of my best "finds" have come from just dropping into
places I've never heard of and trying different menu items.

Do you warn restaurants when you're coming?
No, I'm trying to tell readers what to expect if they eat there.
Warning restaurants of a visit would probably produce extra-special service, food or effort in order to make a good
impression. I want to get the same care (or lack of it) that
other patrons receive and yes, I pay for meals just as normal
customers do, including taxes and tip.

How do you decide what to order?
I look at the menu, ask the staff for recommendations and check
what other patrons are eating. Sometimes I check out favourite
dishes, sometimes try suggestions and sometimes I make wild
guesses.

Why don't you write many critical columns?
I think life is too short to spread gloom and despondency. What I
want to do is spread the word about good-value places I think are
worth visiting, not spend my energy and your time writing nit-
picking critiques of small business trying to make a living.

What makes you qualified to review restaurants?
Probably nothing, except that I eat in them a lot and have the
waist-line to prove it. I am not a certified chef, dietitian or
dilettante. My qualifications are an adventurous eating outlook,
general knowledge and the audacity to judge readers' probable
tastes.
